Organic Farming Action Plan

The Organic Farming Action Plan is a document was was drawn up in 2008. The document is the result of the work of the National Steering Group for the organic sector. The group was made up of different stakeholders from the sector in Ireland. The action plan is the bluebrint which outlines the work which need to be done in the coming years in order to develop organic agriculture in Ireland to reach a target of 5% of land certified as organic.

The National Steering Group has since been disbanded and been replaced by Foras Organach. However they are still using the Organic Farming Action Plan as a model to ensure that the sector develops in Ireland.

Prebudget Submissions

IOFGA have in the past few years submitted several prebudget submissions to the government. The aim of these submissions is to highlight to the government the need to allocate sufficient resources to the organic sector in order to ensure that it can develop to meet the domestic demand for organic products.

In an era when conventional farming is pressurised from all angles with farmers making record low prices organic farmers are finding that their products are still making premium prices and the demand for Irish organic products continues to rise. IOFGA feels that government spending should be allocated to reflect this and more conventional farmers should be encouraged to seriously consider converting to organic production in an attempt to reduce our need to import organic products to meet demand.
