Global area of GM crops declined in 2015

For the first time since the widespread adoption of the cultivation of GM crops in 1996 the amount of land planted with GM crops has decreased. The US, Argentina and Brazil account for more than three quarters of the global acreage. Four main GM crops are cultivated, corn, soyabean, canola and cotton account for the majority of crops grown. The cause for the decline is linked to low commodity prices but is also thought to be due to market saturation.
